Alexandra Ants

Many schools now select pupils (often called "Buddies") to do a special job. This job usually includes befriending others and watching out for any bullying.

At Alexandra First School we have had our "ants" for the last seven years. The ants get some training and wear badges and caps so that the other pupils know who they are. The ants are chosen from our Y4 pupils. All Y4 pupils usually get a turn at being an Alexandra Ant.

Ants are small creatures that help each other. They work extremely hard to make sure their communities are successful. We like to think our Alexandra Ants do the same.

Our ants help the other children to keep the rainbow rules and to do what is right.

They gave a presentation at the Northumberland School Governors' Conference 2001 held at the Marriott Hotel.

They were very proud when they were invited by the BBC to lead an educational programme on the theme of Bullying during 2002.

The ants have their own little song called the AA Rap.

The AA Rap
Alexandra Ants are we
helping our community.
On the yard or round the school
we help children keep the rules.
Our yellow hats are a sign
that help's at hand, any time.
So if in trouble, or in doubt,
ask the ants - we'll help you out!
Yeah!

"Being an Alexandra Ant means being a good friend."

"Being an Alexandra Ant means being kind."

"Being an Alexandra Ant means helping other people."

The ants have special jobs to do. These duties include:

  • Help Mr Craig and the teachers
  • Help the other pupils to keep the Rainbow Rules
  • Look after school pupils and visitors
  • Work together as a team (as ants do) to make sure the school runs smoothly
  • Carry out duties at playtimes and dinner times
  • Help new children who come to the school to "settle in"
  • Think of ideas to help the school
  • Look out for pupils who need help
