| What
is the role of the Curriculum Committee?
The Curriculum Committee
need to acquire a meaningful understanding of the curriculum. They need
to ensure:
(a) the curriculum
offered is 'balanced and broadly based' and meets all statutory requirements
(b) the curriculum meets the needs of all pupils in the school
(c) the curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and
physical development of pupils at the school
(d) the curriculum prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities
and experiences of adult life
(e) the National Curriculum subjects listed below are taught to all pupils:
English; Mathematics; Science; Information & Communication Technology
(ICT); Design Technology; History; Geography; Art; Music; Physical Education
(PE); Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) & Citizenship
(f) there is religious education and collective worship for all pupils
at the school, except those whose parents have chosen to withdraw them
(g) testing and assessment is carried out in accordance with statutory
requirements
(h) the necessary curriculum information is made available to parents
and others and that the annual report must cover any important changes
made to the curriculum during the year.
The committee will
need to determine (in consultation with the staff) what to recommend to
the governing body in relation to curriculum and pastoral arrangements.
Such areas will include:
- shape of school day
- scrutiny of SATs
- learning support and Code of Practice
- collective worship arrangements
- policies (sex education, IT, Equal Opportunities, RE & Worship,
behaviour, various subjects, etc.)
Committee members
may find it useful to take a special interest in particular subject areas,
visiting lessons and becoming involved in new developments with the staff
concerned. In such a way supportive relationships can be developed.
