History

The old Alexandra First School, on Alexandra Road, was built in 1913. At that time it was known as the Hirst East Infant School and it catered for children between the ages of 5 and 7. In 1974 the school was re-organised to cater for pupils between the ages of 4 and 9. The name was then changed to Alexandra County First School. The school has had seven head teachers (plus a temporary head teacher and an acting head teacher) as follows:

1913-1926 Jane W. Gibson
1926-1948 Isabella Mason
1948-1952 Miss Bell
1952-1953 Miss Fish (Temporary)
1953-1964 Miss Emmerson
1964-1979 Mrs Smith
1979-1985 Mr Mike Yorke
1985-1986 Mrs Mary Evans (Acting Head)
1986-2004 Mr John Davison
2004- Mr Paul Craig

In October 1991 we moved to our present new building on Moor House Lane. The official opening of the new building took place on the 4th June 1992. The old building has now been demolished and is the site of Ashington Sure Start. We are very fortunate to have a fairly new school building in which to work. We aim to give our children the best possible start to their education in the best possible environment.
